There are a number of reasons that you may be able to get money off your bill or claim a full exemption for a property.
Council Tax Support Scheme
Council Tax support, previously known as Council Tax reduction, reduces the amount you have to pay on your Council Tax bill
Examples of when you can apply for money off your Council Tax bill:
- You are below pension age and on a low income with savings of less than £6000
- You are of pension age and on a low income with savings of less than £16000 or receive pension credit guarantee

Council Tax discounts
Examples of when you can apply for money off your Council Tax bill:
- there is only one adult living in your home
- a household member has a disability or severe mental impairment
- you are an apprentice, student or young person in training

Council Tax exemption
There are some situations where a property can claim an exemption, meaning no Council Tax will need to be paid for a certain amount of time. Each class of exemption has different requirements.

Supplying evidence
If you have been asked to supply evidence for your discount / exemption application, attach your proof to the application form or supply it at a later date by completing form Council Tax Evidence Request and attaching your documents.
You can submit the following types of evidence
- Image files – format GIF, JPG, TIF, PNG or BMP (maximum file size is 5000MB).
- PDF files – you can upload PDF copies of evidence (maximum file size 5000MB)
- The form does not support the upload of other file types such as DOC/DOCX (Microsoft Word) or xlx/xlsx (Microsoft Excel). If you want to submit evidence in this file type, you must save it first as a PDF document. This can be done by clicking ‘Save As’ in the file menu in Microsoft Word or Excel and selecting ‘PDF’ from the ‘Save As type’ dropdown menu. You can then attach the PDF document to the form.
