Vermin advice and dead animals
The Council does not have a pest control service. You must access private providers found online or in a telephone directory.
Control of wild species
We prefer human and non lethal ways to solve issues with wild species in towns and sub-urban areas. Culling wildlife is rarely an effective long-term solution.
Report a vermin problem
If you see the following problems:
- vermin in gullies at the side of the road in the gutter area (on public land)
- vermin in someone else’s property
You should complete our Vermin report.
To report vermin in other locations, contact the following places:
- Vermin seen in drains, ditches or manholes – you should contact Anglian Water – 03457 145 145
- Vermin in business premises i.e. food outlets etc. Environmental Health 01472 326299 Option 1 to discuss further
- Vermin in empty properties – Private sector housing to discuss further. 01472 326296 option 6
- Vermin in rented accommodation – contact the landlord or agent
- Vermin in privately owned property – contact a pest control company. NELC do not offer this service
An overgrown garden is unlikely to attract rats and the council does not have legislation to force someone to cut their garden.
However if you think the vermin is related to waste in a garden please report the waste using our waste in garden form.

Dead Animals
Animals that are still alive
Firstly, please check if the animal is dead or alive. If it is still alive please contact the RSPCA on 03001234999 who will be able to advise.
Where is the animal?
We can only deal with dead animals or birds on land that is ours. Dead animals or birds on private land must be reported to the land owner and removed and disposed of in the correct and proper manner.
Any dead animals such as foxes, squirrels, etc. that are found in gardens, can be placed in a black bag and placed in the normal waste disposal bin. Birds may also be disposed of in your domestic bin. Please ensure you always use gloves when picking up dead animals or birds.
How we deal with pets
We keep a register of all dead cats and dogs that are collected by our teams. If you are unfortunate enough to lose your pet, please contact us.
If we are not able top trace the owners of a pet we will post a message on our Facebook .
We do not dispose of pets. For further advice and guidance on how to dispose of your deceased pet, please contact your local veterinary practice or visit Pet cremations to arrange a funeral service for your pet.
