Homelessness prevention, housing related support and housing advice

I am homeless or at risk of losing my home

Please contact us using the homeless prevention service request form or ring us as soon as possible at 01472 326296 (option 1) – this is also an out-of-hours emergency contact.

The homeless prevention service aims to prevent homelessness so by getting contact early, they are often able to help you stay in your home. If this is not possible, the homeless prevention service will help you to find a new home, however, you may have to move into temporary accommodation while they look for somewhere suitable.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

The Home Options team works hard to support residents with their housing situation. They can help people who are rough sleeping, sofa surfing, being asked to leave their current home by family,  friends or landlords, involved in disputes with landlords and people who find themselves in other challenging circumstances.

If you are struggling with your housing situation, paying your bills, or if it looks like you may be served an eviction notice, please get in contact as soon as possible. You can do this by filling in a homeless prevention form on the website (Homelessness prevention, housing related support and housing advice | NELC) or by ringing 01472 326296 (Option 1).

The service will seek to support you to stay in your current home where possible. If this is not safe or suitable for you, the service could assist you to look for alternative accommodation. This could include private rented accommodation, shared ownership, or – where eligible – temporary accommodation or applying for social housing.  It is important you approach for advice and assistance as early as possible to have the best chance of preventing homelessness occurring.

If you’d like to learn more about what our team do you can read the following articles on our rough sleeper coordinator Liz, and temporary accommodation support officers, Jo and Marie.

“WHEN I needed it, Jo and Marie helped me sort out my pension and my accommodation. I wouldn’t have survived without their support.” | NELC

The best way to help someone who is rough sleeping is to fill in an alert via StreetLink (StreetLink – Connecting people sleeping rough to local services). The alert is sent directly to our outreach teams, who can then go out to find the rough sleeper and offer them support. By filling in an alert, you are making sure we are aware of the individual and can get them the long-term support they need.

An alert is quick and easy to fill in, simply giving as much detail as possible about the individual sleeping rough – a basic description to include what they are wearing, if they have a tent or sleeping bag, age, hair colour and location, StreetLink even provides an interactive map so you can drop a pin exactly where you have seen them.

If you want to get more involved, there are lots of local homeless charities that can be contacted directly that would welcome some volunteers including:

  • Humbercare at Swan House Allotment
  • Harbour Place
  • Doorstep
  • YMCA
  • Salvation Army
  • With You

The NELC homeless website (Homelessness prevention, housing related support and housing advice | NELC) gives you all the information you need for help with housing – from how to apply to social housing and other local housing support to temporary accommodation and everything in between.

If you need advice or have questions about your housing situation, please ring 01472 326296 (Option 1).

We would urge you to get in touch as soon as possible when you begin struggling with your housing situation. This will allow us to support you as early as possible to keep you in your home or assist you to find a more suitable house.

As the council, we work with many local partners to support residents with their housing situation such as:
